Q: No title cars for sale in Illinois?
Ive been lookin for a beater to fix and drive since i dont have alot of money, but it seems like alot of them are being sold without titles. Is it easy to get a title for a car like these? In michigan i could file for a “lost title” and get one with just a bill of sale. Does it work like that here? I just moved here.
A: What I assume is that you are looking at really old cars that maybe have been sitting for a long time. What you need to do is get the serial number and get the DMV to search their files. That should tell you if there are prior owners or more importantly liens. If there is no record found you can try to register it as a no title car. If there is a record you need to try and contact the registered owner. If you can not find him then you need to do a lien sale. Just pretend the car has been abandoned on your property and go from there. If the seller is the registered owner then you can get him to sign a request for duplicate title form and transfer it with that and a bill of sale.

Q: Does Michigan have a cooling off period for a new car sale?
My 77 year old father moved to Michigan and lives alone. He bought a new jeep and for no reason traded it in on one 6 mos. new, same exact color and everything. We later found out he had a seizure and memory loss and was hospitalized in a pysicartic ward for a few weeks. He is much better, but not totally mentally stable. He just went and bought another new jeep, traded in the 2nd one with only 400 miles on it. The dealer only gave him $2200 and he still owed $2400. He had free financing on the one he traded in, but not on this new one. He called up one day after he got it and asked to bring it back and they told him no, they already filed the title. What can I do to make them take it back and not cost him a lot of money, which he does not have?

Q: Do I have to pay California sales tax for a new car purchased in Michigan?
I am purchasing a new car in Michigan, but will be moving to California immediately after buying the car. I’ve heard that I might have to pay California sales tax on the car if I bought it within 6 months of moving. Does anyone know if this is true?
A: I think that may be true unless you have mileage over a certain amount. I know it used to be 7000 miles.
You can research at http://www.dmv.ca.gov/

Q: If I buy a new car in MI,is sales tax 6% of the difference between new car price and trade-in car value?
I somehow remember they passed some Senate bill on March saying now trade-in value is applied to the calculation of the 6% sales tax when a new car is bought in Michigan. In other words, if I buy a new car in Michigan, the sales tax I need to pay is 6% of (new car price – trade-in value), right? Thanks for ur answer
A: In most states you pay taxes on the NET sale amount.
For example,
new car is $20k.
Trade in allowance 10k
Payoff existing loan $5k
Net trade in allowance= $5k
Taxable net sale= $15k
Q: No Title….Michigan Resident?
I live in Michigan. I see a lot of cars for sale that have no title. Many say they are clean title and come with bill of sale. What do I have to do to get a title? Can I get one? The secratary of state here says without title, no chance of getting one. I dont believe that. There must be some way. Thanks for any help.
A: SOS in Michigan is not easy to deal with. Any car in sold in Michigan should have a title, or the current owner should be able to get one, unless theres something fishy. I’ve owned cars as old as ‘67 and always had a title. It’s a big risk to buy w/o title.
Q: No Title….Michigan Rules?
I live in Michigan. I see a lot of cars for sale that have no title. Many say they are clean title and come with bill of sale. What do I have to do to get a title? Can I get one? A: Cars came from other states – possibly Katrina flood cars or stolen.
Q: Do people have a legal right to get a car returned to them after selling it at a garage sale?
My father sold a car at a garage sale this weekend. The next day he decided he shouldn’t have sold it. He called the buyer who refused to return it. Are there any rights for my parent’s. They live in Michigan.
A: ^^ what he said ^^
people – there is no 3-day “cooling off” period on car sales. Done is done. You don’t get to take it back and call a do-over within 3 days, 3 hours, or 3 minutes. Once ink is on paper the deal is sealed
Q: Should I keep my Michigan driver’s license, or get a SC license?
Should I keep my Michigan driver’s license, or get a South Carolina license?
I have been living and working in South Carolina since Dec ‘06. However, I still drive a car with Michigan plates (registered under my father’s name and address, which is my previous address), and I have a Michigan driver’s license under this address. I also have the title to the car in my possession, but have not yet registered the title.
According to the SC DMV online, I was supposed to have already registered my vehicle and obtained a SC license if I am a “permanent resident”, but I do not know what defines a “permanent resident” and I might be moving back to Michigan soon.
Of note: my title has a “date of sale” dated 12/29/06, although I have not yet signed the title, and the penalty for late fees is $75.00 for late registration in SC, but $15.00 in MI (so I’d rather register in MI). I will soon be driving to MI anyway.
A: Where do you currently reside(live…eat, sleep, drink, potty?)? That defines a permanent resident. If you do all that in S.C. then you had best get to the DMV and get a new DL and RO. If you are the new titled owner but you haven’t signed the title then you haven’t actually purchased the vehicle as of yet unless you have a bill of sale in your hand. Even if you move back to MI you need to have your current information correct now. IF you were to get pulled over for any minor thing right now you would be facing over $500.00 in fines for not having a valid RO and your DL being incorrect.
