Q: Is a diesel Jeep wagoneer a good car to convert to a bio-diesel vehicle?
I am searching for a Diesel Jeep Wagoneer that is in decent condition that can be converted to bio-diesel vehicle. Is it possible to convert?

A: If you are going to run already pure biodiesel, what you are really concerned about is the attack of rubber parts in the fuel system by the fuel, the biodiesel will eat up old style rubber parts but new rubber (viton) seals and teflon hoses or all metal fuel lines are impervious.

So any newer diesel (don’t know the exact year on Jeeps, sorry, but after 2002 should be OK) should be already fine, any older ones are going to need hoses, fuel lift pumps, possibly an injector pump rebuild ($$ maybe 400 $$) and proably a few fuel filter changes, the biodiesel will clean all the old sludge out of the tank and it will clog a few filters until it is all gone.

Q: 1989 jeep wagoneer that I want to buy and will need a motor in a year? How much does one cost?
I want to buy this 1989 Jeep Grand wagoneer that supposedly runs well, but may need some motor work in a year and I want to replace it. This is a car that I want to drive and slowly restore over the next year or two. The cost of the car is 1750. there are 117000 miles on the car, and just a little spot of rust. Any suggestions? also any suggestions on where to get a third row seat to have installed in this? Thanks!

A: 89 Wagoneer… “XJ” (Cherokee body), or the “SJ” Grand Wagoneer (full sized) old large body Jeep SUV. Both are electrical nightmares and famous for not passing emissions testing. If that is a factor in your state.

If you are planning to remove the engine and install it yourself and having a machine shop rebuild it. I would plan on spending $2000 assuming you replace ware items such as: water pump, complete tune-up, mounts, hoses, etc, etc, etc.
If you intend to have it done, I would double that amount and then some depending where you have te work performed.
If the Cherokee body is what your after I recommend buying a 1997 to 2001 with the 4.0l 6 cyl. That is the best, most reliable engine Chrysler used.

Driving and restoring a vehicle at the same time is a chore. Good luck in what ever you decide.

Q: Where is the float in the gas tank of a 73 jeep wagoneer?
We just got a 73 jeep wagoneer and the gas gauge doesnt work. My husband found we guess its the sending unit, but there was no float on it. We drained the tank out and it was not in there. Jeep couldnt tell me where it is because their computers and catalogues only go back to 1981.

A: ok when you pulled your sending unit there is a long metal bar …on the end of that bar should be the float…if its not there its in the tank or its missing here is a link to a pic of your sending unit http://www.mtscompany.com/images/sendingunits/jwsu-1.jpg
and your part # is > jwsu-1 < i hope i helped ,good luck.

Q: Is a 1981 Jeep Wagoneer a generally reliable vehicle?
Im thinking about buying a 1981 Jeep Wagoneer. The only concern I have is if the vehicle will hold up.

A: nobody can really answer that question without looking at the car. It’s now technically an antique. You should have it taken to a garage and have em give it a once over and tell you what they think. Take into consideration;
1. How’s the frame, if the frame is rusted out the vehicle is junk unless you wanna do an expensive rebuild
2. What’s the mileage? 200,000 is certainly not what you’re looking for.
3. Was it kept up? Previous owner good about maintenance? Regular oil changes?
4. At what point are you going to have to put some more serious money into this car. When you get into a car this old, it’s always going to need work done. If you love the car and it’s pretty solid, go for it, but it’s going to always need work and finding parts might not always be easy for a car that’s almost 30 years old, but jeeps are usually not as hard.

Q: How much gas does a Jeep Grand Wagoneer use?
Im looking to purchase either a 70’s, 80’s or 90’s model jeep grand wagoneer- and i need to know what the average gas usage is?

Any other details you have on Jeep grand wagoneers is welcome, thanks!

A: Looks like between 15-16 for a 1985 grand wagoneer. This is the link to the fuel economy.gov page. You can research most mileage on this site.

Q: What axles does my 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer have?
I have a 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with the AMC 360 5.9L V8 engine. Did these all come with the same axles? If so, what are the axles? If not, what are the options, and how do I tell which package I have?

I suspect I’m running one Dana 44 and one AMC 20, but I’m not entirely sure. Thanks!

A: Most likely a Dana 30 front and 44 rear, But check here for axle housing ID info. www.stu-offroad.com

Q: Is it possible to put an alternative energy engine (ie hybrid or diesel) in an old Jeep Wagoneer?
We really love the old Wagoneer bodies, but aren’t about to pick one up unless we can swap out the engine. Anyone know how we could do this, or even if? Also, what would the costs be?

A: This is going to cost a ton of money. Far more than you will ever save in gas expense. And you will still have an old vehicle.

Q: Where can I find Jeep Wagoneer chrome window trim?
Does anyone know where I can get Wagoneer chrome trim (windows and body)? Cherokees don’t have the side window chrome and it’s nearly impossible to find a Wagoneer in junk yards around where I live.

Thanks!

A: Unfortunately XJ Wagoneer parts are getting very hard to come by. Your best bet is to find a complete truck and get the parts you want and sell the rest.

If you come across a couple of good tail lights let me know.

Q: Why won’t the select track work on a 1984 jeep Wagoneer limited?
The jeep is a 4×4. The select track button does not work and it won’t go into 4 wheel drive. What could be the problem?

A: The most common failure I have seen on this vintage of Jeep is the vacuum actuator on the transfer case. It could be a simple as a broken or loose vacuum hose, but often it is the diaphragm in the actuator,

I had this same transfer case in one of my off road Jeeps and had a vacuum line pop off in a creek, I had to get towed out so I could put the line back on.

Q: What are the average yearly maintenace costs for a 1987-1988 Jeep Wagoneer?
I’ve always wanted one but am very ignorant about the vehicles. Is there anything I should keep my eye on when looking to buy one? Are they always in 4×4 mode? The one I’ve got my eye on has been sitting for 3 years. Will it need a complete overhaul? Are they easy to work on? Etc.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

A: that all depends on the car. How well was it maintained, how many miles, and just overall health of the car. It’s definitely going to require attention a lot, on a car that old you’re going to be constantly fixing things. As long as the major things like the frame, engine, transmission and cab are in pretty good condition, then it might be worth it. This is the price for having an older car that you’ve always wanted. I have a 97 jeep that i love and always working on because at the age of 13 everything in it has reached the end of the typical life expectancy so I’m always fixing this and that, but i don’t care because I’ll do almost anything to keep my favorite ride on the road. Also because the car you want is a little older than even mine there is a chance that someone could have rebuilt it completely. This means it’s going to cost a lot, but if someone stripped it down and completely rebuild the jeep it give it a whole new life. Good luck, and the best decision I’ve ever made was to buy the car that I loved and made driving even errands fun.

Q: On a 1972 jeep wagoneer, am i supposed to have constant power to the voltage regulator?
also does anybody have a wiring diagram or know where to find one on the internet for free?

A: Yes, you will have power to the voltage regulator as long as the battery is in the vehicle.

I’ll check for the schematic.

I checked and couldn’t find one on-line.
I am referring to my 1968 Dodge R/T service manual I don’t have a 72 dodge book.

Yours: Grumpy

Q: What is the OEM Stereo in a 1983 Jeep Wagoneer Limited?
I am not sure what the OEM Stereo Manufacturer is. I’d also like to know what size and make the speakers are.

A: i have a 90 limited and my factory stereo and speakers are jenson

Q: How do I identify the “type, brand, model” of carburetor on my 1985 jeep wagoneer xj?
I always hear of Rochester and Carter but how do i go about identifying mine?

A: Im not for sure but all the carberators I know of Have the name and should be some id numbers in a decently visible place. You may have to remove the breather and possibly a hose if it is blocking the name but it should be on there. You can call a part store if it is factory and they can tell you what it is.

Q: I have a 1987 Jeep Wagoneer and my friend lost the only key I had to start the vehicle. How do I get new ones?

A: I seriously doubt that the dealer has you key pattern on record from 20 years ago. Ask anyways, just in case.

Back in the 80’s Jeep used a standard GM lock cylinder for the ignition. A new one with two new keys is about $20 at NAPA and installation is usually 30 to 45 minutes. If you have a steering spring compressor (own, rent, borrow), you can do the job yourself if you have a Chiltons manual.
