Q: can a used car be “certifed” if sold at dealership not affiliated with the same brand?
For example, if a used Jeep is for sale at a Nissan dealership, can Nissan ever offer the Jeep as “certifed” used vehicle (assuming they put the vehicle through all the normal checks to become certified)?
A: There is no standard definition or legal value to the word “Certified”
It is an insurance policy. Who ever is going to do or pay for the repair determines exactly what certified means.

Q: Are old Jeep Cherokees/Grand Cherokees reliable?
I’ve noticed that with gas prices so high, I see a lot of nice used Jeeps for sale for around $5,000 with only 80-100k on them. I’m thinking that if I buy one straight out, even if I have to spend $300 a month in gas to drive it, it beats $175 in gas, $150 for a car payment, and then an extra $40 for full coverage insurance to drive something more fuel efficient but smaller and less versatile. The only hole I could see in my logic is if the maintenance costs on the Jeeps are really high. I can do some basic maintenance and minor repairs myself to save money there. So, how reliable are these things at around 100k, and how hard are they to maintain and repair?
A: The average 100k Jeep will need the water pump, alternator, and starter replaced in the next 50k miles, simple DIY stuff.
Injectors seem to go next, the crimped connection in the middle of the old ones leaks fuel. Again, not a major mechanical exercise.
The TPS and CPS may need replacement, they are simple bolt on a plug in repairs, mechanically. The TPS must be set with a volt ohm meter, and the instructions are basic. Twist the unit until you get the right voltage at idle.
Blowby from less than perfect ring seal causes gaskets to leak and need replacement. Sometimes the crankcase vent tube gets clogged to the intake. Cleaning it is no problem. Gasket replacement with the newer silicone types works well.
The fuel pump can be replaced without dropping the tank, or at least not far. Thank you Jeep for leaving some room. Be careful diagnosing a bad pump, most newer mechanics go wrong because it was a crank position sensor or something. If the pump has power and works ( and you can jumper it,) it works. Look for something else. It’s probably not the filter either.
The AW4 automatic just wants new fluid every 60k, it’s nearly indestructible in a stock Cherokee. Probably why it’s also used in the Lexus.
Try to get one new enough with working R134 A/C, if it has it. You don’t get enough discount from a used car dealer to cover the potential costs of repair. Look for old grime or no new scratch marks around the fill valve. Recently charged A/C disguises a lot.
Brakes are a little undersized – upgrade to premium pads, they make a significant improvement. Otherwise, chinese rotors and drums work fine.
Q: I am looking for a Front Bumper for a 1996 Jeep Cherokee (used). Does anyone have one for sale ?
A: Try ebay or your local junk yard.
Q: How much to bargain for a used car?
Hello, I’m looking to buy a used jeep wrangler and don’t want to spend a penny over $17,000. How much, or what percentage is usually able to be bargained off the sale price? If I want to spend 17K should I search for cars priced at 19K? 18K? Thanks
A: Your right in the ballpark with your figures, probably in the $18,500. range.
Q: Few questions about buying a used jeep wrangler…?
I am looking into buying a used jeep wrangler(maybe a 2006) but I have a few questions about what to look for:
1. Which model is better sport or x? I am not interested in the sahara, rubicon, or SE
2. Which kind of doors are better the full metal or half solf/half metal? Or should I have both for the different seasons? Because if I get the half metal, I’d want the half soft to have the sliding glass
3. I see a lot of jeeps for sale that are the hard tops but I want a soft top, so is it easy to sell the hard top and just buy a new soft top?
I’ve have been looking at jeeps for awhile now and want one soon. Please help me out thanks!
A: You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here – carinsurance.yoll.net
Q: Should I buy this car?
I’m looking for an old jeep or truck to use to drive around the US for five months camping starting November. I want a car that is already pretty beaten up so that I can drive off road or on bad roads without worry. I also want something that is decently reliable and as fuel efficient as possible but still has 4×4. I am leaning toward a jeep simply because I love the idea of being able to take the top off and enjoy the sunshine. I am not automotive-repair-smart right now but I’m interested in becoming that way between now and November.
I’ve fallen a little bit in love with the interior shots of this because of its retro-indiana-jones-beat-up appearance and probably need someone to talk some sense into me.
What do you think? It is listed for just under 5,000 on ebay.

A: Any 13-year-old Jeep that can command a price of $5,000 is probably too nice to actually take off road. There’s no shortage of 4X4 vehicles at Ebay Motors at half the price.
Q: Does any one know where military jeep parts around Southern California are being sold?
Hello, we are looking for used military jeep parts for sale. It could be as old as world war 2. Any ideas? Please help!
A: I live in Texas and found LKQ to be a great source for warrentied used parts, but I found them through the Jeep dealership. I would try to call your local Jeep dealership and ask them for a part that they would not carry anymore (over 20 years old) and then ask if they can recomend some places that sell used parts in the area. They have to use some one too when people have older vehicles and Jeep does not make the part anymore.
LKQ might even be able to send you the parts you need.
